Cookie Run OvenBreak Review: A Sidescrolling Endless Runner Game by Devsisters

About The Game Creators

Cookie Run OvenBreak is made by Devsisters, a South Korean company focusing on manufacturing and developing mobile entertainment and gaming apps founded in 2007. The company was initially created as a start-up named Extra Standard. They changed the name to Moblier Corp and finally in 2010 they were established as Devsisters. They foresaw Apples ascendancy so they shifted their focus on iPhone gaming and application market. They started producing and launching several games including OvenBreak, (Cookie Run predecessor) which was a huge success in the IOS store, followed by OvenBreak Infinity (2009) and OvenBreak 2 (2012-2013). In order to establish a solid market in South Korea Devsisters took OvenBreak, revamped and renamed it Cookie Run. The game was such a huge success that they decided to produce international releases. In February of 2014, thirty days after the release of the English version, Cookie Run was downloaded more than 10 million times. By July 2015 the game has reached 50 million downloads!!!

Gameplay

Cookie Run Ovenbreak is a free to play endless runner where you control a cookie that tries to escape from an evil witch, who tries to capture and bake it in her oven (storywise). Gameplaywise, player competes with other real life players in asynchronous multiplayer leagues which are called Trophy Races that  last five to ten  minutes, where each one tries to achieve a better score by collecting jellies, coins and other sorts of powerups. When timer ends players are being placed and receive their rewards (chests and trophies) based on their performance. There are other modes too (1vs1, 1vs1 via bluetooth) but the most rewarding is the one mentioned above. Chests contain various upgrades and currency for tuning your Cookie runners and  trophies are the keys that unlock harder stages. There are R.P.G and Strategy elements  such as upgrading your runners and their pets following them (Yes there are pets too with each one with different abilities!!!) There is no actual endgame since its an endless runner, but the main goal of this game is to reach the highest league and compete with the best ”runners”.

Controls

Easy to learn, hard to master. Cookie Run has only two buttons to interact with in order to ”Jump” and ”Slide” while trying to avoid obstacles and collect points. The jump button can be pressed twice while on air in order to perform a double jump. Thats it folks, but  dont be misled, even though the learning curve is gradual, the races require skills such as time management, vigilance and good reflexes if you want to constantly place to the Top 3.

Graphics and User Interface

Clear and colorful 2D graphics paired with an attractive and consistent User Interface that promotes gameplay. Very nice tutorial in order to prepare the player for the upcoming races but sometimes the information displayed on the screen is too much to handle. Paying attention to your health, obstacles, coins, powerups, side events becomes hard to follow and not to forget mentioning that there is even a Real time score feed constantly informing you about your rivals performance which I found it to be extremely stressful but truly magnificent.

Sound and Music

Cookie Run is not a game you will play for its music theme, so it would be safe to say that since the music does not caught your ear and attracts your attention either for good or bad reasons, it flows nicely with the gameplay and fits the game.

Social Features and In Game Store

Cookie Run includes some social features such as logging with a Facebook account and adding friends from your friend-lists which is rewarded with in game premium currency which can be used in the Game Store for buying other heroes, upgrading them and unlocking your chest rewards faster. Its a typical, like most modern in game stores but well constructed and easy to navigate.

Replay Value and Fun Factor

In order to play the game you need to be constantly online, granding its a multiplayer game. After investing some hours playing the game, content becomes repetitive and it’s kind of grindy if you want to reach the top tier leagues. Although, it offers a fast paced gameplay, random events and many cookie runners and items to collect, increasing its replayability.

Conclusion

The game is a typical 2D sidescrolling endless runner which is inferior compared to the genre’s  leaders, but when  blends its unique multiplayer mode it emerges and stands out. If you like competing games and clashing with real people this game will eat away much of your spare time.

This is a really fun game, I let my little nieces play it and they love it too. Its theme reminds me of Christmas so it gets me in the mood for my favorite holiday coming up. Nice review.
